Police are searching for the person who shot a man in Raleigh on Monday.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers received a call about shots being fired around 5:39 p.m. on Thelma Street. When they arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound.
The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
One man, who asked to remain anonymous, said that he’s lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years. He told WRAL News that shootings like Monday’s were no longer shocking, but expected.
“I can’t even get out here and cut the yard. Because you don’t know what’s coming,” the man said. “These people that live over here are actually good people. They’re just scared.”
WRAL News reached out to Raleigh City Councilor Corey Branch for answers to the following questions:
- Is there a crime problem in the Thelma Street area?
- What do you have to say about the neighbors who worry about safety?
- What’s being done to address crime?
Some of the issues that we have that addressing are not just, they’re not illegal. No, someone being homeless is not a crime. The key is us trying to work and try to assist them and help those who are homeless are someone that may have some type of um mental health issue, our mental health crisis, addressing those as well, but we continue RPD continues to work um openly and using all other means and measures that they have to give attention to all illegal activities. According to a neighbor on Thelma Street, he’s done waiting for an answer after asking for changes for years.
“Cory, this is your district. You’ve been voted in twice. I’ve been after you for three years. I’ve met with Mr. Wees, Mr. West, Mayor Mika all of us have talked about this,” the neighbor said. “You need to clean it up.”
Police told WRAL News that their investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 919-996-1193.
