What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these South Bend Tribune newspaper excerpts to give you an idea. Original errors are left uncorrected.

April 12, 1904: “Frank Teuksbury, a prominent farmer living seven miles northwest of the city, was on his way to town this forenoon with a load of oats and when within a few miles from the city he was stopped by two men, members of a band of gypsies who have been camping near the city limits for the past week. The men compelled Mr. Teuksbury to get out of his wagon when they relieved him of $5 in cash and then proceeded to unload 12 bushels of oats, transferring them to their own wagons.”

April 13, 1911: “The Lafayette street crossing of the Grand Trunk Western railroad was held for over a half an hour this forenoon by an east bound train. The train was a long one, extending from the west side of Lafayette street almost to Vistula avenue. It was cut at several of the streets, including Michigan and finally at Main, but no effort was made to clear the Lafayette street crossing and for over 30 minutes all traffic on that street was compelled to drive around the end of the train or seek another crossing.”

April 14, 1922: “Live baby chicks of every color catch the eye of the pedestrian who passes the Reliance pharmacy, 230 West Washington street. A miniature chicken yard, enclosed by a green picket fence is the attraction in the window of the drug store. All the chickens were dyed with an unusually effective Easter egg dye.”

April 15, 1936: “Miss Aurelia Schwartz, daughter of Mrs. Samuel Schwartz, 112 South Notre Dame avenue, who will be graduated in June from St. Mary’s academy, has been chosen valedictorian of her class, the announcement having been made today by Sister M. Evangelista. During her four years at the academy Miss Schwartz has had an A average each year and has been particularly interested in the study of art.”

April 16, 1942: “Students and professors in the college of chemistry at the University of Notre Dame had their part in South Bend’s Nutrition week program Wednesday when Dr. Robert R. Williams, of Washington, D. C., the nation’s foremost authority on vitamins and health, was a guest of the department.”

April 17, 1956: “John E. McIntyre, executive vice president and general manager of the Sibley Machine Co., received the Man of the Year award from the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley Monday night at the club’s annual Universal Notre Dame night dinner in Morris Inn.”

April 18, 1967: “From 200 to 300 University of Notre Dame students crossed U.S. 31 about 9:30 p.m. Monday in an apparent attempt to another “panty raid” at St. Mary’s College, but the try fizzled, police said.”
