UAE campaign to collect used devices for students worldwide nears 70 per cent target
A UAE initiative to collect and repurpose used electronic devices for students globally has achieved 70 per cent of its goal, according to organisers.
The “Donate Your Own Device 2.0” campaign aims to gather 100,000 devices, refurbish them, and distribute them to students in underserved areas around the world.
Launched by the Digital School in partnership with the Emirates Red Crescent, the campaign has received support from over 140 organisations in the UAE, including government entities, private companies, and educational institutions.
The initiative’s goal is to enhance access to digital education while also reducing electronic waste. Devices are collected, securely refurbished, and either reused or recycled based on their condition.
Refurbished equipment has already been sent to countries like Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, and Mauritania, as well as parts of Africa, to establish digital classrooms and support educational programs.
The campaign will continue until reaching the target of 100,000 devices. Individuals and organisations are urged to donate unused electronics through the campaign website or by sending an SMS to 2441 for Etisalat subscribers, or 3551 for du subscribers.
Launched in 2023 during the UAE’s Year of Sustainability, the “Donate Your Own Device” initiative has resulted in a reduction of CO2 emissions by 320 tonnes, saved over 1.5 million kilowatts of energy, decreased fuel consumption by more than 460,000 litres, and reduced electronic waste equivalent to over 90,000 square meters.
The Digital School, established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in November 2020, is the first accredited digital school of its kind. It has benefitted more than 850,000 individuals across 40 countries, providing educational programs in seven languages in collaboration with governments, international organizations, and universities.
