Is France moving to the right? Listening to CNEWS and looking at the results of the municipal elections in cities like Brest, Clermont-Ferrand or Besançon, one might believe it. To be sure, we asked the question to sociologist Vincent Tiberj.
“Is France moving to the right?”asked the deputy general director of the Ipsos polling institute, Brice Teinturier, a year ago, in the Two Worlds Review. His IFOP counterpart, Jérôme Fourquet, was already wondering in 2013 in the columns of Monde : “A France that is becoming more right-wing?”. Their colleague Dominique Reynié, general director of the Foundation for Political Innovation, no longer even asked the question in 2022 and dropped the question mark: “Électoralement, la France est à droite”. The irresistible rise of Jordan Bardella, the resonance that CNEWS gives to certain themes such as insecurity or immigration, the electoral results of the Republicans and the National Rally can make us believe that France has become right-wing. Is this really the case?
Marième Cisse asked the question to Vincent Tiberj, professor of political sociology at Sciences Po Bordeaux and researcher at the Émile Durkheim Center. He published in 2024 French right-wing, myth and realities at Presses Universitaires de France.
