The war in Iran will push South Africa to explore its oil potential? The conflict in the Middle East has exposed its vulnerability in terms of energy supply. Yet, the country could be sitting on significant hydrocarbon reserves. For years, the outspoken Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy has been advocating for the exploration of these potential reserves. So far hindered, he hopes to see the tide turn in favor of the crisis.
“The only solution for us to get out of this is to drill, drill, and drill again to produce our own oil. If we don’t, we won’t be able to overcome the risks associated with wars,â€, reiterated the Minister, Gwede Mantashe, in front of Parliament on Wednesday, March 25, reported the South African media News24.
The South African government assures that the country is currently not threatened by a shortage despite the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz. A perspective reinforced since Iran announced that “non-hostile” ships could benefit from a right of passage, under certain conditions. Ships bound for South Africa, close to Iran, will be allowed to pass, confirmed the Iranian ambassador to South Africa.
