United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised concerns about the dangers of the ongoing conflict, now in its second month, and its potential global impact.
Today, Guterres issued appeals to all parties involved, urging the United States and Israel to halt the conflict immediately, while also calling on Iran to cease its attacks on neighboring countries. He highlighted that the Security Council has condemned these military actions and emphasized the importance of Iran respecting freedom of navigation.
Guterres also underscored the widespread ramifications of the conflict, such as disruptions to navigation, particularly in the vital Strait of Hormuz. This has led to higher food and energy prices, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable nations. To address these issues, Guterres has deployed his Personal Envoy, Jean Arnault, to support diplomatic efforts, emphasizing the necessity for dialogue to prevent further devastation and advocating for a peaceful resolution.
In related news, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently addressed the American public, defending Iran’s actions and urging people in the United States to see past misinformation and confrontations between the two countries.
Previously, Secretary-General Guterres established a task force to address escalating risks to maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in the region pose threats to global supply chains and humanitarian operations.
