Fort Lee Celebration of Month of the Military Child
Fort Lee, Va. – The Fort Lee Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation’s Child and Youth Services recently held a proclamation signing event commemorating the Month of the Military Child. The event, attended by Command Sgt. Maj. Nickea Harris, the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Lee Command Sergeant Major, along with other Fort Lee leaders, parents, and military kids, took place on March 31 at the CYS School Age Center.
“At Fort Lee, we strive to remind our children that they are an integral part of the larger Army family,” said Tamara Johnson, the Fort Lee CYS coordinator. “Throughout April, our Child and Youth Services team has planned a series of enjoyable events to create lasting memories in honor of our military children.”
The Month of the Military Child, observed annually in April, serves to recognize and commend military children and youth for their dedication, commitment, and sacrifices in support of the Army’s mission. This observance underscores the Army’s dedication to offering excellent care and fostering positive youth development for a bright future.
“Military children have the opportunity to experience incredible things such as meeting new people, traveling around the world, and embracing diverse cultures,” added Johnson. “However, the transient nature of military life can also present challenges. On average, military children relocate approximately 10 times.”
To acknowledge and celebrate the resilience of military youth, Fort Lee has arranged a series of engaging events throughout the month. Children enrolled in CYS programs are encouraged to attend the Pep Rally on April 3 for a fun-filled field day of music and activities at the CYS Campus Sports Field.
Additionally, the community is invited to participate in the Color Run on April 25, where participants will be covered in colorful dust while running along a designated route on the CYS campus. The Color Run is open to the public, with registration being a prerequisite for entry.
Families are also encouraged to join the Jump Jam on April 30 at the CYS Campus Sports Field. This event, featuring games, bounce houses, and entertainment, is free and open to the entire community.
The theme for the April 2026 Month of the Military Child, “Military Children and Youth: Strength in Every Story,” highlights the everyday bravery of military children. Their stories, characterized by resilience, adaptability, and quiet strength, exemplify the remarkable character they develop while growing up in a world defined by service and sacrifice.
