In the first week of the baseball season, Angels manager Kurt Suzuki remains optimistic about his team’s defense, despite concerning statistics that paint a different picture. The Angels currently rank low in various defensive categories, including Outs Above Average, Fielding Run Value, and FanGraphs’ cumulative defensive metric. While these early numbers may not fully represent the team’s defensive capabilities, Suzuki acknowledges the need for improvement.
The team’s struggles were evident in recent games, with costly errors impacting their performance. Pitcher Walbert Ureña’s errant throw against the Astros led to eight unearned runs, and catcher Logan O’Hoppe also contributed to defensive lapses. Key players like third baseman Yoán Moncada and center fielder Mike Trout faced challenges, highlighting areas for improvement.
Despite these issues, Suzuki emphasizes the positive aspects of the defense, noting several impressive plays by players like Moncada, Peraza, and Trout. While acknowledging the room for growth, Suzuki believes in the team’s overall defensive capabilities and emphasizes the importance of consistency and learning from mistakes.
In a lineup change, Jeimer Candelario replaced Moncada at third base for a game to provide freshness and opportunities for all players. Moncada’s offensive struggles added to the decision, with Suzuki prioritizing player rotation and development. Meanwhile, right-handed reliever Kirby Yates is progressing in his recovery from a knee injury, aiming to return to full form.
The Angels are preparing for their upcoming game against the Cubs, with left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi set to face off against Matthew Boyd on Wednesday. Despite defensive challenges, Suzuki and the team remain focused on continuous improvement and collaborative effort.
