Spain prohibits airspace to American military planes. Since the beginning of the conflict in Iran, Pedro Sánchez, the Socialist Prime Minister, has been against the war. On Monday, March 30th, a new step was taken. Spanish airspace is off-limits to Americans who must go around the country to strike Iran. “Spain will never allow the use of the Rota and Morón bases to conduct a war that we are completely opposed to,” said Margarita Robles, the Spanish Defense Minister.
This decision is seen as hypocritical by the right-wing opposition. “This anti-war stance is a sham”, stated Alicia Garcia, spokesperson for the right-wing opposition PP in the Senate. American flights can stop in other European countries before bombing their targets in Iran.
Keir Starmer, the Labour Prime Minister, may authorize the use of its bases, but in the face of the prospect of a ground conflict, he does not want to be trapped: “This is not our war and we will not be drawn into it. What we have done is take defensive measures to protect British interests and those of our allies in the region.” The British are discussing with NATO ways to secure the Strait of Hormuz to allow maritime traffic to resume.
Switzerland investigates calls for cyber warfare. A group called Handala hacked the FBI director’s messaging. Close to Tehran, these hackers are rumored to be planning sabotage on infrastructure in Israel. “They have published information about electricity networks, water networks in Israel,” said Gérôme Billois, a cybersecurity expert. Handala is recruiting widely for payment to destabilize the Western world. “We are really in a war of perception, impression, and subjectivity. And in that, the Iranians are very strong,” stated Pierre Pahlavi, a professor at the Royal Canadian Military College. The FBI has shut down sites, but others have resurfaced.
