Spain has taken a clear political stance. On Monday, March 30, it announced the ban of its airspace for American aircraft involved in the war against Iran, reiterating its opposition to the strikes carried out by the United States and Israel since February 28. “The use of [American bases in Spain] is not authorized, and, of course, the use of Spanish airspace for actions related to the war in Iran is also not permitted,” said Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles.

This decision has concrete consequences on American military operations, with some bombers having to circumvent the Iberian Peninsula to reach the Middle East. It aligns with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s position, who deems this war “illegal” and “a significant mistake.”

This refusal of cooperation has provoked strong reactions from Donald Trump, who threatened to “end” commercial exchanges with Spain. While Madrid blocks any use of its bases for operations related to the conflict, missions outlined in bilateral agreements remain in effect. This episode occurs in a broader context of tensions between the two countries, particularly regarding military expenses, with the United States reproaching Spain for not reaching the 5% of GDP target as set within NATO.
