According to the Washington Post, the United States is preparing for operations in Iran. This revelation comes as an amphibious assault ship has been deployed in the Middle East.
The Pentagon is gearing up for weeks-long operations on the ground in Iran, reported the Washington Post on Saturday, citing American officials, as the United States ramps up its presence in the Middle East.
Such operations are not expected to involve a large-scale invasion of Iran, American officials emphasized anonymously, but rather would entail raids on Iranian territory by both special forces and other soldiers.
3,500 new deployed soldiers
According to the Washington Post, it was not clear on Saturday whether Donald Trump would approve all, some, or none of the Pentagon’s plans. The information from the capital city’s newspaper comes as the United States strengthens its position in the Middle East with the arrival of the amphibious assault ship Tripoli, announced by the American military on Saturday.
This aircraft carrier is leading a naval group that includes “approximately 3,500” sailors and Marines, according to the American Centcom command.
The ship’s arrival announcement comes shortly after statements from the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who stated on Friday that the United States could achieve its goals in Iran without deploying ground troops.
However, Donald Trump has been ambiguous about this possibility for several weeks, and several American media outlets have reported in recent days that the president is considering sending at least 10,000 troops to the Middle East soon.
