Microsoft is working on a new option that would allow its Edge web browser to open automatically when you start your PC. A function that Google has been working on for several months with Chrome.

Microsoft may give you one more reason to want to get rid of its Edge web browser. The Redmond company is in fact testing the possibility of Edge opening automatically when you start your PC as soon as you connect to your session.

A behavior which is reminiscent of that which Google has been testing with its own browser for several months. To speed up the opening of Chrome, the Mountain View firm wants to start it automatically by opening a navigation window in the foreground when starting Windows 11.

A new source of slowdown for your PCÂ?

Repéré par nos confrères de Windows Centralthis new Edge behavior tested by Microsoft allows Edge to automatically open a navigation window ready to be used as soon as your Windows session is started.

Among certain users, a priori a group that is currently still quite small among whom Microsoft is testing this option, a banner displayed at the top of the window indicates that “Edge now launches when you sign in to Windows, so it’s ready when you want to browse. You can change this behavior at any time in the settings. »

The main problem with this new behavior is that Microsoft visibly activates it by default, without asking the user’s opinion. The company does offer a “No thanks” button to refuse this behavior, but it’s a safe bet that many will not pay attention to it and will simply close this banner.

The question that may now naturally arise is whether this behavior will have a negative influence on the performance of your PC. We will probably have to wait a little longer for Microsoft to deploy the option on a large scale and carry out tests to find out what it is.

A change planned for several months by Microsoft

A few months ago, leaker Leopeva64 had already mentioned the integration of such an option on Microsoft Edge. He nevertheless specified that unlike Chrome, the Microsoft Edge window opened in the background, and not in the foreground.

The arrival of such a change in the behavior of Microsoft Edge is not very surprising, and even seems quite logical. This change is a continuation of what Microsoft already offers with its browser.

When it is configured as the default web browser, the Redmond firm already automatically activates Edge Quick Start without asking your opinion.

This function “enables faster browser launch and seamless startup performance by running Edge processes in the background†Microsoft explains on its website.
