Linux takes a step forward on Steam and shakes up the established balance. This surge is accompanied by a measurable decline in Windows in the latest hardware and software survey of the platform.
Steam Linux accélère, cap à 5,33 % en mars
Linux systems reached 5.33% of machines surveyed in March. This is +3.10% compared to February, after an increase to 3.5% in January then an upward correction of last month’s figures.

A notable portion of these installations is based on SteamOS, the distribution customized by Valve, credited with 24.48% of Linux installations and up 0.65% month-on-month. The other distributions also contribute to the overall progression.
Faced with these movements, macOS grew by 2.35%, or +1.19% over one month. Linux now weighs more than twice as much as macOS on Steam, with momentum that has almost doubled its share in one month.
Windows drops to 92.33%, internal switch between 10 and 11
The Windows family maintains 92.33% share, down 4.28% compared to February. The internal rebalancing is marked: Windows 11 climbs from 10.57% to 66.85%, when Windows 10 loses 14.89% and falls to 25.36%.
Windows 7 remains marginal at 0.08% of Windows installations, with a gain of 0.03% within this segment. The table suggests cross-migrations…: a share of gamers are switching to Linux, and to a lesser extent to macOS, beyond simple 10 to 11 upgrades.
The rise of SteamOS among Linux installations indicates the ripple effect of a standardized environment for gaming, likely to increase the visibility of Linux among studios. If this traction continues, the incentive to offer more native ports could be added to the current relay provided by Wine/Proton.
