The Windows 11 task manager will evolve. Microsoft will integrate new columns to display an overview of NPU usage on machines that embed a neural processing unit.
Microsoft put the latest Insider builds of Windows 11 online a few days ago. If these updates do not introduce any revolution, they still introduce a fairly interesting new feature regarding the Windows 11 Task Manager. You will soon be able to obtain detailed information on the use of your PC’s NPU as well as applications that run in containers.
Better insight into NPU usage in Task Manager
Concretely, Microsoft wants to allow you to better visualize applications that use the neural processing unit. This is particularly the case when you use an application that performs AI processing locally on your machine.
« We’re updating Task Manager to provide better visibility into NPU usage for PCs that have it. New optional columns “NPU” and “NPU Engine” are now available in the Processes, Users and Details pages. The Details page also adds optional “NPU Dedicated Memory” and “NPU Shared Memory” columns to give you a deeper look into how workloads are using NPU resources. Additionally, if neural engines are part of a GPU, they will now appear in the Performance page, providing a more comprehensive view of AI-related system activity.†Microsoft details in its blog post.
You will be able to add new columns for NPU usage in the Processes tab, by right-clicking on one of the columns, the display of NPU usage being optional. Obviously, these new columns will only be offered to you if your computer is equipped with an NPU.
Better visibility into apps running in containers
The other new feature coming to Task Manager is the ability to add an Isolation column on the Processes and Details tabs for applications that run within a container.
As a reminder, these are applications that run in a special mode, an AppContainer, isolated from the rest of the operating system, and which therefore has no other field of action than its “sandbox”.
