A buggy Windows 11 cumulative update, deployed last week, refused to install on some PCs. Microsoft has just released a patch to resolve the problem.
In recent months, Windows 11 updates have rarely been problem-free. Whether it’s Patch Tuesday or cumulative updates, Microsoft has, on several occasions, had to remove problematic updates before pushing out an emergency fix. A few days ago, the Redmond company had to once again remove update KB5079391 which was causing some problems for some users.
This was in fact affected by a nasty bug preventing its installation and was the cause of an error 0x80073712 accompanied by the message “some update files are missing or have problems“, especially among users registered to receive preview updates.
This optional update, which was to be deployed to all users with Patch Tuesday this April, introduced, among other things, the new operating mode of Smart App Control. This can now be reactivated without having to reinstall the entire operating system after being deactivated.
Microsoft releases emergency hotfix patch
This bug when installing update KB5079391 is now resolved. Microsoft has just released an out-of-band update labeled KB5086672 to restore the situation.
« [Configuration] Fix: When installing the Windows Preview March 2026 Update (KB5079391), some devices running Windows 11, version 25H2 or 24H2, may encounter the following error: Some update files are missing or experiencing issues. We will try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)» Microsoft details on its support page.
This update can be downloaded now by going directly to Windows Update. To do this, open the Parameters of Windows 11 (using the keyboard shortcut Windows + i or by making a right click on the start menu), and select Windows Update in the left column.
Microsoft, which has had bad luck and has been experiencing problems with Windows 11 for several months, had promised a few weeks ago to plug the gaps to regain user confidence.
A promise that the company recently confirmed, by revealing its future plans to change Windows 11. The Redmond firm had thus announced a long list of improvements requested for years by users.
Microsoft wants to return to the fundamentals of Windows 11, by taking its foot off the integration of AI, by reviewing the Windows Update update mechanism, but also by finally resurrecting a removable and resizable taskbar.
