In an EdTech landscape largely dominated by international languages, Kukubela is positioning itself in a still little-explored segment: learning African languages.

Kukubela is an online learning platform developed by an Angolan startup. It offers courses dedicated to several languages spoken in Angola and Central Africa, including Kimbundu, Kikongo, Umbundu, Tshokwé and Lingala.

The application is based on content designed by native speakers, with the aim of offering both linguistic and cultural learning. The startup, based in Luanda, was founded in 2023 by António Nicolau (photo).

“Engagement is strongest among diaspora users who seek to reconnect with their cultural identity, as well as among Angolans who want to formalize knowledge of languages they heard growing up but never formally studied,” to indiqué M. Nicolau.

The app is available on iOS and Android, where it has been downloaded more than 5,000 times, according to the Google Play Store. Unlike traditional applications, focused on grammar, Kukubela adopts an immersive approach. The modules integrate cultural elements such as proverbs, traditional stories or even everyday dialogues in order to contextualize the learning.

The platform also offers interactive features such as an integrated dictionary, a translator, audio content for pronunciation, as well as a community space allowing users to interact with teachers and other learners. Designed for mobile use, the application focuses on short formats (a few minutes per session) in order to adapt to user constraints. It already has several tens of thousands of users around the world, particularly among African diasporas.

“We currently have over 35,000 registered users, spread across Angola and the African diaspora abroad (mainly Portugal, Brazil, the UK and France). We have approximately 220 active paying subscribers in Angola and the diaspora, as well as a small number of trial users », said Antonio Nicolau.

Beyond language learning, Kukubela is part of a broader dynamic of promoting African cultural heritage. By digitizing languages that are often rarely present in technological solutions, the solution contributes to their preservation while facilitating their transmission. In a context of the rise of online learning platforms in Africa, the platform illustrates an emerging trend: that of African platforms which invest in cultural niches to offer solutions adapted to local realities and the needs of diasporas.
