Since the hit of the Colombian series Narcos on Netflix, Pablo Escobar has established himself as a central figure in criminal fiction. With the mini-series Dear Killer Nannies, offered in France on Disney+, the gaze shifts towards another protagonist: his son.

Presented in preview at the Séries Mania festival, this mini-series follows the childhood of Juan Pablo Juampi Escobar in Colombia in the 1980s, surrounded by bodyguards who become his playmates. Many therefore wonder if Dear Killer Nannies is a true story or a pure fiction.

Dear Killer Nannies: Juan Pablo Escobar’s childhood under armed protection

In Dear Killer Nannies, Juan Pablo, nicknamed Juampi, grows up in a luxury bubble built by money from the Medellín cartel. As a child, he sees his father as “being both a successful businessman and the defender of the most deprived of Medellín”, according to the Disney+ presentation, while young armed sicarios become his improvised nannies and even his friends.

Little by little, the series shows the cracks in this ideal image. He understands that these bodyguards are hired killers ready to do anything to protect him and that Pablo Escobar is one of the most wanted men in the world. The result is a tense family drama, between overprotected palaces and constant threat.

Dear Killer Nannies is it really inspired by a true story?

The answer is yes, but with an element of romance. Created by Sebastián Ortega, Juan Pablo Escobar and Pablo Farina, the miniseries is based on the memories of Pablo Escobar’s son, who became a writer under the name Sebastián MarroquÃn. He has already recounted his childhood under armed escort in several autobiographical books and here intervenes behind the scenes to guarantee this child’s point of view.

This does not make the series a documentary. The story condenses years of life into 8 episodes of approximately 35 minutescertain characters of sicarios or relatives being composites inspired by several real figures. Many Latin American critics point out that the challenge is not to reconstruct each fact, but to convey the dizziness of growing up in the heart of a criminal empire.

Dear Killer Nannies on Netflix or Disney+: where to watch the series in France?

Because of the natural connection to Narcos, many still search for Dear Killer Nannies on Netflix. In reality, it is a production co-produced between Colombia and the United States by The Walt Disney Company Latin America, Telemundo Studios and TIS Productions. In France, the series is available exclusively on Disney+ since April 1, 2026, in the Star catalog.

Presented as a family drama with a strong thriller dimension, the series explores the loss of innocence, filial loyalty and the weight of an inheritance that is impossible to escape. Watching Dear Killer Nannies follows a child who discovers that his nannies are killers and that his name exposes him to violence that he never chose.
