This term refers to stays built around film or series filming locations and this tourist trend is proving particularly lucrative in the Spanish capital, Madrid.
In April, the head of tourism at the town hall, Almudena MaÃllo del Valle, presented the conclusions of a study (source in English) from the Madrid Film Office, produced in collaboration with the LR Klein University Institute of Economic Forecasting of the Autonomous University of Madrid, which highlights the spectacular growth of the city’s creative sectors.
Over the period from 2021 to 2024, the research “Dimension and economic impact of film and series filming in Madrid” identified 173 films and 242 television series filmed in the Spanish capital.
These projects generated a total economic impact of 1.54 billion euros in production spending, or an annual average of 385.5 million euros.
For MaÃllo del Valle, the study shows how the sector creates jobs and attracts investment throughout the city. She also believes that it “contributes decisively to projecting Madrid’s image internationally as a creative destination, while stimulating tourism linked to this global visibility.”
Year after year, Madrid remains a highly sought-after filming location, both for Spanish and international productions. In 2025, as part of its efforts to promote local tourism, the regional government of Madrid has committed to providing three grants totaling 1.5 million euros for the next Woody Allen film.
“Wasp”, an acronym for “Woody Allen Summer Project 2026”, is to be completed by December 31, 2027 and will be filmed in and around Madrid, with “identifiable locations” on screen.
Other titles include Deception, a scene of which was filmed on Calle de Alcalá, The Cold Light of Day and Terminator: Dark Fate, also filmed in the Spanish capital.
On filming locations: the essential sites
Want to follow in the footsteps of the stars? The city’s tourist office and the Madrid Film Office offer a whole series of tours through the filming locations of films and series.
Faced with the influx of TV productions arriving at the gates of Madrid, the town hall has set up a two-part itinerary entitled “Madrid, capital of series”. The first is a plan that lists nine titles filmed in Madrid, including the popular Netflix series La Casa de Papel (Money Heist). The second guide adds eight more critically acclaimed titles, including The Midas Touch and Small Coincidences.
The “Madrid Berlanga” itinerary, available in English and Spanish, pays tribute to one of Spain’s most influential directors, Luis GarcÃa Berlanga. Born in Valencia, Berlanga moved to Madrid in 1947.
This 15-step journey begins in the family home in the Chamberà neighborhood, where he worked on classics like Welcome Monsieur Marshall, Plácido and The Executioner, and ends at the Cervantes Institute, where in 2008 he deposited a previously unpublished script in the artistic archives, Not to open until 2021, for the centenary of his birth.
Madrid discovered cinema in 1896, when the Lumiere brothers’ Cinematograph was screened for the first time in a hall on the Carrera de San Jerónimo, in the heart of the city.
