The mother, a 23-year-old young woman from the province of Nghệ An, was pregnant for the first time after a promising course of in vitro fertilization. However, at just 25 weeks pregnant, she was hospitalized for cervical prolapse and Y-shaped uterine insufficiency.
The thirteen days of pregnancy were thirteen days of anguish, each hour counting, so that the babies grew a little more in their mother’s womb. Despite everything, the premature birth took place. On January 12, the two babies were born very small: the girl weighed 950 g and the boy 900 g.
The babies were immediately resuscitated and transferred to the neonatal unit. At this stage of the pregnancy, their lungs were not yet mature enough to allow them to breathe on their own. They began their lives on respiratory assistance, under drug treatment and with all the little care, however essential they may be.
Both infants suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome “due to” hyaline membrane disease, requiring treatment with Curosurf and invasive mechanical ventilation for 9 days, followed by CPAP for an additional 32 days. For babies weighing less than a kilo, every day was a challenge.
The little girl had a more serious form of hyaline membrane disease, grade IV, associated with serious coagulation disorders requiring fresh frozen plasma transfusions, anemia and neonatal infection. The little boy presented a similar situation, with grade III hyaline membrane disease and an early infection acquired shortly after birth.

During their first days, babies cannot breastfeed. They are kept alive by intravenous drip. Then comes a very slow and careful increase in milk production, while the babies gradually learn to live. It is not until around 34 weeks corrected gestational age that the mother is allowed to see her baby for the first time.
Nearly two months passed before the mother was finally able to touch her child, hold him in her arms and practice breastfeeding. From then on, she counted the days until her return to the maternity ward. Not to do anything extraordinary, but simply to see your child a little longer, touch him one last time and believe that he was growing and getting better every day.
After more than two months of treatment, the 63-day-old girl reached 1,800 g and the 59-day-old boy reached 1,750 g. Both babies were able to leave the hospital and now weigh around 3 kg each.
