While Islam is already the state religion in the Maldives, new laws further restricting freedoms of expression and religion were adopted last September. Their effects are beginning to be felt in the archipelago, further endangering Christians there.

Since President Mohamed Muizzu took power in November 2023, his administration has imposed restrictions on religious freedom on citizens. Its goal is to maintain the country’s Sunni identity, reports International Christian Concern on January 29.

Last September, several laws on the media and freedom of expression were adopted. They stipulate that any broadcast or communication threatening Islam, national security, public health or public welfare can be punished by public apology, fines or warnings.

Citizens of the island cannot practice or follow any religion other than Islam. The practice of religions other than Islam is strictly regulated and must not exceed the limits of the home. Those who convert to Christianity thus face strong pressure. Among these converts, those of Muslim background are the most exposed since they incur heavy financial sanctions and in some cases, the death penalty.

According to the NGO Portes Ouvertes, “every Maldivian is required to be Muslim and anyone who leaves Islam loses their citizenship.” Only non-Maldivian nationals are allowed to practice a religion other than Islam, and only in private settings.
