Valérie Roberts has been realizing a “little girl’s dream” in recent days: she has become the new face of Revlon’s ColorSilk hair color range.
L’animatrice est bien habituée à faire your own dye at home. For several years, she had “platinum bleached hair.” She also wore different colors over her hair: powder blue, lavender, silver.

“I was that friend, when she was young, who did the coloring for all her friends. I always loved that. For me, it comes naturally. My life schedule doesn’t always allow me to take hours at the hairdresser. So, it’s very practical,” she told us during an event organized by Revlon in Montreal.
She adds that doing your own dye at home is much less expensive than doing it at a hairdresser.
We took advantage of our interview with Valérie to ask her for some advice on how to make your own dye at home, especially for someone doing it for the first time.
Here is 3 tips for making your dye at home according to Valérie Roberts!
1. Don’t have your hair too clean or too dirty
According to Valérie Roberts, it is extremely important not to have your hair too clean or too dirty when you want to dye your hair at home.
If your hair becomes dirtier a day after washing it, it’s the perfect time to dye it.
2. Position the hair correctly
To make it easier to apply the dye to the hair, Valérie advises brushing it well and even separating it well.
Finding your stain color can be quite complicated. This is why Valérie suggests going “according to the experience” you want to have with your hair look.
“The further you move away from your natural color or your current color, the greater the change will be […] If you take a color that’s not that far from yours, it’s fun because it will revive the color,” she explains.
In addition, Valérie told us that there is no color that she would not like to try. She even always dreamed of having red hair! For her, hair dyeing is a real “game” which is always “reversible”.
3. Take the time to make the dye
Valérie lets you know that if you decide to do your dye when you don’t necessarily have the time to do it, that means that it’s not the right time to apply your dye.
“It’s like teleworking, but TV coloring,” he says, comparing the process.
After making your own dye for the first time at home, Valérie says you often realize it’s easier than you might think.
As Valérie suggests, it is even possible to organize an evening with friends to make your dye and make the moment more pleasant!
Ideally, you should not dye your hair every week so as not to damage your scalp. Favor moderation!
