A shock wave is sweeping through the entire surf community today. Saturday night, the streets of Papeete were the scene of an absolute tragedy. Tom Kostyra, a shining and talented figure in French surfing, lost his life in a tragic traffic accident. He had just celebrated his 23rd birthday. The news of his sudden disappearance has left his loved ones, as well as all sports bodies and enthusiasts, in deep shock.
The Call of the Fenua: Promising beginnings in French Polynesia
Originally from French Polynesia, the young man had a strong bond with the ocean from a young age. It was on the demanding and crystalline waves of Tahiti that he honed his seafaring skills under the watchful eye of Julien Miremont. The former professional bodyboarder, now a high-level coach, quickly recognized the raw potential of this kid passionate about the elements.
However, Tom’s destiny first took him away from the line-ups. At fourteen, a family move sent him from the shores of Strasbourg for his third year of middle school. Away from the Pacific swells and the Polynesian way of life, he temporarily put his board aside to focus on his schooling in Alsace.
Brittany and the rise to the elite level
But one does not turn away from the call of the waves so easily. With saltwater running in his veins, the young athlete decided to embrace his passion wholeheartedly. Supported by a understanding family, he proved his determination by successfully making it through regional selections.
This return to grace led him to leave the family nest as he entered Year 11 to join the Labelled Training Centre (CLE) in Brittany. Through perseverance in the cold waters of the Atlantic, he climbed the ranks to join the prestigious Pôle Espoirs Surf of the Brittany League in his final year of high school. A remarkable achievement for someone who had stepped away from the waves a few years earlier.
A respected competitor across France
His sporting journey reflects his open-mindedness and love for the various French spots. Tom Kostyra proudly wore the jerseys of iconic coastal structures. Whether it was the ESB Surf Club in Finistère, the Lacanau Surf Club in Gironde, or the legendary Hossegor Surf Club and Santocha Surf Club in the Landes, he left an indelible mark everywhere.
A fierce competitor but known for his sportsmanship, he tackled regional trials, stood out in national championships, and even tasted the rigors of the World Surf League’s Qualifying Series (QS) circuit, challenging international surfers.
“His talent, dedication, and above all his kindness and good humor will be forever etched in our memories.”
A return to his Tahitian roots
Despite his many connections to the mainland, Tom’s heart beat to the rhythm of French Polynesia. Two years ago, he made the bold choice to return to live on his childhood land. This return to his roots was not just a personal quest; it was the culmination of a true life project. As a surf instructor in Tahiti, he shared his passion and expertise with the younger generations daily. Those who knew him describe a smiling young man, of rare kindness, whose total commitment to surf culture was admirable.
Today, the entire surfing community mourns the loss of one of its own. The entire team at Icones surf shares in the grief of his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege to share a session with him.
