As part of Save The Waves’ global conservation program, each global surf reserve adopts a ‘local management plan’ to reach and resolve key conservation issues in the region. For Puerto Escondido, three objectives have been defined: 1) improve water quality and prevent land pollution; 2) restore the Zicatela wave; and 3) protect essential ecosystems.

This recognition not only allows us to better organize ourselves, but also to carry out the scientific studies necessary to prevent such poorly planned projects from happening again.« », declared Almendra Gomezleyva, local manager and president of the local management council.

At the moment we are fundraising for bathymetric studies of Zicatelain order to understand marine dynamics and ensure that future constructions do not harm the wave. With the designation of World Surfing Reserve, we are more united than ever.. » Â

For the Save The Waves coalition, the creation of the Puerto Escondido Global Surfing Reserve represents an important step for the conservation of Mexico’s surfing ecosystem.

“Protecting these surf ecosystems is absolutely critical to further preserving biodiversity, building coastal resilience, and safeguarding the future of the waves that have made Puerto Escondido a world-renowned surfing destination,†says Nik Strong-Cvetich, CEO of the Save The Coalition Waves.

We are very honored to work with our local partners in Puerto Escondido and we believe this is a step forward and an important indicator for better protection of Mexican surf spots. Together, we are moving in the right direction.. »
