Oier Plaza is a director from Guernica, a city bombed by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria on April 26, 1937.
Little is known about the true resistance fighter, Enric Moner, except for his prisoner number “6448” in the Flossenbürg camp in Bavaria. Another Catalan, Enric Marco, had used this number for decades, impersonating a survivor of the death camps with a false story. Writer Javier Cercas wrote a book about this case called “El Impostor”.
In parallel, Antón Gandarias seeks information about his uncle, Anjel Lekuona, who was captured by the Gestapo in France. Their paths cross with Unai Eguía, leading them to uncover a mysterious letter from Grégoire Uranga, a survivor of the Hradiště concentration camp in Czech Republic.
The letter, written in French, remained secret for decades and revealed the connection between Grégoire Uranga and Anjel Lekuona’s tragic fate. The discovery leads to an astonishing revelation about František Suchý, a former crematorium director in Prague who kept the ashes of thousands of victims from Nazi and communist regimes.
Oier Plaza, Antón Gandarias, and Unai Eguía embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind the dark past of their relatives, culminating in a tribute to the lost souls who have no graves or monuments to honor their memory.
The film crew also created a website dedicated to the investigation, including lists compiled by František Suchý. The director, Unai Eguía, turned this story into a book titled “And the Fields Were Left Without Flowers”, aiming to raise awareness and recognition for the bravery of František Suchý.
