Lili Hinstin, known to film lovers in the Lion city and beyond, passed away on Tuesday, March 31st at the age of 48 after a long illness. She was the general delegate of Entrevues from 2013 to 2018, the international film festival of Belfort.
“Lili was a cinema lover, a bold and visionary programmer,” shared the Belfort association Cinémas d’aujourd’hui on social media. The festival celebrated its 40th edition last year.
“The Entrevues festival is mourning the loss of its second mistress after Janine Bazin, its founder back in 2003,” said Gilles Lévy, president of Cinémas d’aujourd’hui. Describing Lili Hinstin as representing lightness and audacity, he added that her passion and high standards swept everything along with her.
After her time at Entrevues, Lili Hinstin became the artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland in late 2018. In 2020, she left the Swiss festival due to strategic differences. She then joined the selection committee of the Villa Medici Roman festival in 2021, before becoming the director of programming at the Biarritz International Film Festival, Nouvelles vagues, since 2023. The upcoming 4th edition of the Basque event, from June 23 to 28, will be dedicated to her.
