On Friday, April 24, 2026 at 8 pm, Cinema Les Arcades in Val-de-Reuil, the Val-Mix-Cité association, and the SCD Nor (Solidarity Against Sickle Cell Disease in Normandy) are organizing an evening around the documentary “Beyond the Pain” directed by Sara Adjaho.
The screening will be followed by a debate led by Dr. Cécile Dumesnil, a hospital practitioner specializing in pediatric hematology-oncology at the Rouen University Hospital.
Synopsis: Sickle cell disease, sometimes called the “disease of pain,” is characterized by an abnormality in hemoglobin causing a deformation of red blood cells giving them a sickle shape. The most widespread blood disease in the world, particularly in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, sickle cell disease is the most common rare genetic disease in France (with 13,129 affected individuals in May 2024). Yet it remains little known, both to the general public and healthcare professionals, to the point of being considered socially invisible by those affected. Some studies in social sciences have highlighted the scarce public policies concerning sickle cell disease and emphasized that in the global North, it is often associated with marginalized groups. It has been referred to as the construction of an ethnic disease.
TICKET PRICE: 4.50 euros.
