Veronique Sanson Opens Up About Her Past Relationship with Michel Berger
Invited to “20:30 Sunday” on France 2 on March 29, 2026, Veronique Sanson reflected on her life, including her romantic relationships. As photos of Michel Berger, with whom she had a relationship since the late 1960s, were shown on the set, the singer couldn’t hide her emotions.
“A ‘Twin'”
Facing Veronique Sanson’s teary eyes, Laurent Delahousse stepped in. “You are still moved to see these images. Immediately, the emotion comes back,” he said. The singer quickly confirmed this. “Of course. We had a blast, we had the same sense of humor, we had the same writing, we were twins, I felt,” she recalled, noting that he was “much more rock’n’roll than many people who ride Harley Davidsons.”
Between the two former lovers, humor also played a role. “I used to tease him all the time because he drove the car like a foot,” she gave as an example.
A love that lasted for several years before the relationship came to an end in 1972.
Love for Five Years
Veronique Sanson and Michel Berger began their relationship in 1967. Having known each other since childhood because of their parents’ friendship, they met in a professional setting during an audition organized at the singer’s record company. Love quickly blossomed.
After five years together, the couple separated, coinciding with the release of the singer’s very first album, “Amoureuse.”
In reality, Veronique Sanson has regrets from that time. “I blame myself for not telling Michel that I was in love with another man,” she explained. The year after their separation, in 1973, she married musician Stephen Stills. Their relationship was marred by domestic violence against the singer. The divorce was eventually finalized in 1980.
