The University of Caen, located in Calvados, received a prestigious distinction in March 2026. It was designated as a UNESCO Chair for its program “Law, History, and Neuroscience for Sustainable Peace.” The chair, established just a year ago in March 2025, is part of a research initiative. In September, a new university diploma in education for peace and human rights was introduced.

“Being awarded the UNESCO Chair label is both an honor and a responsibility,” said Professor Armelle Gosselin-Gorand, who heads the chair. “This UNESCO designation marks a significant milestone. It allows us to translate fundamental research into practical action for society. It confirms the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to understand the conditions for lasting peace.”

“This international recognition will enhance our scientific collaborations, develop young researchers’ training, and broadly disseminate our work in support of a culture of peace,” added Armelle Gosselin-Gorand.

“Beyond institutional recognition, this project raises a little-explored issue: the role of memory (individual and collective) in shaping conflicts and sustainable peace conditions,” continued the University in a statement.

The University of Caen’s chair aims to provide educational opportunities for students, teachers, and civil society actors. The UNESCO designation opens up new avenues for international cooperation, strengthening scientific partnerships with other UNESCO Chairs and international university networks.
