Donut Lab tests a new semiconductor battery that will allow the production of electric motorcycles.

Electric motorcycles are experiencing rapid growth, but still face significant challenges regarding charging time and installation space. However, the motorcycle industry could be on the verge of a revolution thanks to air-cooled semiconductor battery technology.

Recently, Finnish company Donut Lab, specializing in battery technologies, partnered with Verge Motorcycles to test its latest semiconductor battery technology on the electric motorcycle Verge TS Pro, launched in early January.

Test results show that the 18 kWh battery can recharge from 10% to 70% in just over 9 minutes, and reach 80% in only 12 minutes. The test was conducted on a high-power public charging station, with the maximum charge power recorded exceeding 100 kW. Calculations indicate that with just a 10-minute charge, the electric motorcycle TS Pro can travel up to 299 km.

Donut Lab claims that their new semiconductor battery technology offers charging speeds three times faster than previous generations. While a charge power of 100 kW may seem less impressive compared to the ultra-fast 1,500 kW charging stations of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD, Geely, and Zeekr, the main advantage of this technology lies in its thermal dissipation system.

While electric cars require complex liquid cooling systems for fast and safe charging, the semiconductor battery from Donut Lab on the Verge TS Pro uses only air cooling. This reduces weight and saves space, a crucial factor in motorcycle design.

Ville Piippo, Donut Lab’s technical director, stated, “This is the first public test showing the performance and operation of multiple battery cells in real conditions. The high energy density of semiconductor battery technology allows us great design flexibility and superior performance, even for demanding applications like electric motorcycles.”

In the future, with the optimization of Verge Motorcycles’ software, charging times are expected to further decrease. These advancements gradually remove the main obstacle to the development of electric motorcycles, making recharging as fast and convenient as refueling with gasoline.
