- Vance accused Brussels of trying to suppress the will of the Hungarian people.
US Vice President JD Vance expressed his full support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during his visit to Budapest for the Hungarian presidential election on Sunday. Vance hailed Orbán as a “model” for Europe and said the Trump administration shared Orbán’s nationalist political line.
Accusations against Brussels
The US vice president arrived in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, on Tuesday to deliver Trump’s message of support to Orbán. “I wanted to send a signal to everyone, especially to the bureaucrats in Brussels,†he told journalists at a press conference alongside Orbán. During this press conference, he also accused Brussels of interference in the elections “in order to keep the Hungarian people under control”. Later, at another rally, Vance and Trump reiterated their solidarity through loudspeakers. They also highlighted the close ties that unite them.
Discussions on urgent issues
Orbána said he also discussed with Vance the “great challenges facing Western civilization,” including migration, gender ideology, family politics and global security. Furthermore, the Hungarian president condemned what he considered to be blatant interference by foreign intelligence services in the Hungarian electoral process.
Polls currently indicate a possible victory for the opposition party led by Péter Magyar. However, institutions close to the government predict that Orbán’s Fidesz-KDNP coalition will remain in power. Since the start of his second term, Trump and his government have ignored the traditional reservation towards foreign elections. They now openly support leaders who they believe align with U.S. diplomatic goals. (ev)(fc)
