Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune signed, on Sunday, a presidential decree convening the electoral body for July 2, 2026, with a view to the election of members of the National People’s Assembly (APN).

“With a view to the election of members of the National People’s Assembly, the electoral body is convened on Thursday July 2, 2026,” specified this decree, published in the latest official journal of the Algerian Republic.

The same text also announced an exceptional revision of the electoral lists is open, from Sunday April 12, 2026 and which will be closed on Sunday April 26, 2026.

According to the country’s Constitution, the electoral body to organize legislative elections is convened 90 days before the expiration of the mandate of the current legislature. In anticipation of this deadline, the government has amended the Constitution to review the prerogatives of the independent national election authority (ANIE). Under this revision, this body was relieved of the logistical aspect of the electoral operation, now entrusted to the Ministry of the Interior.

Political parties and independents wishing to take part in this political competition have around thirty days to draw up lists of candidates and prepare the files to be submitted to ANIE, 60 days before the election.

The number of seats to be filled in the APN is 407 seats. They are allocated to each wilaya (department), according to the electoral law, on the basis of allocation of one seat for each 120,000 inhabitants, while allocating 1 additional seat for each remaining 60,000 inhabitants. However, it cannot be less than 2 seats for each of the wilayas whose population is less than two hundred thousand 200,000 inhabitants.
