Dozens of yellow vests gathered in Liège against the rise in fuel prices: “The government does not take people’s distress seriously”

It is this recent surge in prices at the pump which constitutes the trigger for the relaunch of this movement which had disappeared a few years ago from the Liège landscape.

“Fuel is one drop among so many things that we have been accepting for too long, which has pushed us out. The government does not take seriously the distress of people who already make enormous efforts on a daily basis,” believes Bélinda, one of the instigators of the movement.

Beyond the prices at the pump, the demands extend to purchasing power in general and to the sharply rising price of housing. The demonstrators, who say they are financially strangled, also denounce the profits made by large energy companies thanks to the war in Iran, citing in particular TotalEnergies, a group whose share price has climbed from 68 euros to almost 80 euros in the space of a month and who made a profit of a billion dollars by buying a large number of barrels of oil just before the start of the conflict.

“We are here to position ourselves against a whole series of anti-social decisions. Whether you are retired, sick, job seeker, worker or volunteer, everyone is affected,” comments Bérénice Gillot, demonstrator.

If no blocking action has been officially announced at this stage, other initiatives have been mentioned following this mobilization.
