In Greece, the government caught up in the CAP fraud scandal

A bottomless pit, an endless scandal. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office requested, on Wednesday 1isIn April, the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of eleven deputies from the majority as part of the investigation into fraud in European subsidies from the common agricultural policy (CAP), revealed in spring 2025. Two ministers are particularly concerned.

“The investigation concerns alleged offenses and contraventions affecting the financial interests of the EU, namely incitement to breach of trust, computer fraud and false certification with the aim of obtaining an illicit advantage for others… declared the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in a press release.

Limit damage

“The political shock caused by the new revelations of the Opekepe scandal [agence publique chargée de l'allocation des financements aux agriculteurs grecs] is such that the government cannot escape the shocks… warns the center-right newspaper I Kathimerini.

Last October, thirty-seven people were arrested for their alleged participation in the embezzlement of funds allocated by the CAP. A real “systematic and large-scale fraud system†, according to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
