30 million people, 5000 kilometres of coastline, a dominant position on the Mozambique Channel. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. A rich island. At least its soil. Vanilla, cocoa beans, semi-precious stones, rare metals, or sea cucumbers … Some say the island is blessed by the gods.

2% of the world’s biodiversity flourishes in Madagascar: the island is among the few countries (only seventeen) with “mega biological diversity” on our planet.

80 to 90% endemism: a record rate! Most of the animal and plant species that live in Madagascar exist nowhere else on Earth. Out of the 12,000 plant species, some produce spices or fruits that have a strong appeal for export, such as lychee or cloves.

85% of the world’s vanilla production comes from Madagascar. The Red Island thus completely dominates the market, along with Indonesia.

800 billion dollars: that is the estimate of the total potential of national mineral resources. Nickel and cobalt exports, in particular, could boost the country’s revenue.

Despite this, Madagascar is struggling. The Great Island is terribly unstable politically.
