A restaurant in Nagoya is attracting global attention for its unusual dining concept, where customers can choose to be slapped before their meal.

As reported by the New York Post, the Shachihoko-ya restaurant offers a “face slap” service as part of its menu, with customers paying 300 yen, approximately $175.08, to be slapped by kimono-clad staff. An additional 500 yen, around $291.80, is charged for customers who want to select a specific staff member.

The concept, which has gone viral in a video, has become popular among both tourists and local diners, with customers willingly queuing up for the experience. Reports indicate that many patrons find the act relaxing rather than unpleasant. The idea is said to have started with one staff member and expanded due to increasing demand.

The trend gained momentum after a video was shared on X by a user known as @JakeCan72, explaining the concept and its development. According to the post, the service was initially free but became a paid option as demand grew. Customers even requested multiple slaps, leading to the evolution of the concept to include female customers in administering the slaps.

The viral video showcases multiple instances of staff slapping customers, receiving thousands of views and prompting humorous reactions online. Users reacting to the video expressed amusement, with some joking about applying for jobs at the restaurant, while others highlighted the novelty of the concept. One user mentioned that such experiences are usually associated with metropolitan areas like Tokyo, suggesting it would be less common in rural regions like Kyushu due to social norms but still acknowledging the appeal of the idea.
