A man was killed and a Crittenden County sheriff’s deputy was injured Thursday in a shooting in Sturgis in Union County, according to a Kentucky State Police release.
What You Need To Know: – A man was killed and a Crittenden County sheriff’s deputy was injured Thursday in a shooting in Sturgis, Kentucky, according to a Kentucky State Police release. – KSP said the incident occurred when officers were serving emergency guardianship paperwork at a residence on KY-365. – Gunfire was exchanged between Deputy Rick Coyle and 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, resulting in Phillips’ death at the scene. – Deputy Coyle was airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, and a woman was safely removed from the residence.
KSP said a preliminary investigation found that officers from the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office and staff from the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services went to 2807 KY-365 just after 5 p.m. to serve emergency guardianship paperwork. During the visit, the deputy, Rick Coyle, and Ronnie Phillips, 60, fired shots at each other.
Phillips was killed at the scene; Coyle was hit and airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. A woman was safely removed from the home. No other injuries were reported.
KSP said it was assisted at the scene by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Police Department, Crittenden County EMS and Crittenden County Coroner’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.
