The Chief of Staff of the US Army, Randy George, was fired by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to two defense officials and a source familiar with the matter. Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has been making changes in the Pentagon by removing top generals and admirals to align with President Donald Trump’s national security agenda.

The Pentagon confirmed George’s retirement, even though he had over a year left in his term. The reason for his departure was not disclosed. The US military is currently increasing its forces in the Middle East and carrying out operations against Iran, with a focus on Navy and Air Force strikes.

The Army is the largest branch of the US military, with about 450,000 active-duty soldiers. Thousands of soldiers from the elite 82nd Airborne Division have also been deployed to the Middle East, potentially for ground operations in Iran.

Recent developments at the Pentagon include Hegseth reversing a decision to investigate Army pilots flying near singer Kid Rock’s house, along with the dismissal of George. General Christopher LaNeve will take over George’s role in an acting capacity.

George’s removal is part of the ongoing leadership changes at the Pentagon, following the firing of other senior military officials. George, an infantry officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was confirmed as Chief of Staff of the Army in 2023. He previously held positions as the Vice Chief of the Army and senior military adviser to the Defense Secretary.

The office for George did not provide immediate comment on his dismissal.
