Toruń to light up blue for autism awareness
On April 2nd, Toruń will once again join a global movement dedicated to raising awareness about autism and promoting acceptance and inclusion. As part of the World Autism Awareness Day celebrations, the Piłsudski Road Bridge will be illuminated in blue—the internationally recognized color symbolizing solidarity with people on the autism spectrum and their families. This powerful visual gesture connects Toruń with cities around the world that participate in the “Light It Up Blue” campaign.
However, this initiative is far more than just a symbolic act. It represents a collective commitment to building a more inclusive society—one that values diversity and fosters understanding. Autism is not a single condition but a broad spectrum of experiences, encompassing different ways of communicating, interacting, and perceiving the world. For many individuals, it brings unique strengths as well as daily challenges. In Poland, tens of thousands of people are diagnosed with autism, and this number continues to grow, making awareness and education increasingly important.
By lighting the bridge in blue, Toruń sends a clear message: the city stands for empathy, openness, and support. It encourages residents to reflect on how they can contribute to a more welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of neurological differences. Awareness leads to understanding, and understanding builds stronger, more compassionate communities.
Residents are encouraged to take part in this meaningful day in simple but impactful ways. Wearing blue clothing, sharing information on social media, talking with family and friends about autism, or showing kindness and support to those who may need all of these actions matter. Even small gestures can help break down stereotypes and foster inclusion.
On the evening of April 2nd, as the bridge glows blue against the night sky, it serves as a reminder that behind this color are real people, real stories, and real lives. Together, through awareness and empathy, we can help create a world that is more understanding, accepting, and accessible for all.
Toruń announces Easter public transport schedule
During the Easter holiday period, from April 2 to April 7, 2026, public transport in Toruń will operate according to modified schedules. These changes are introduced to reflect the different travel patterns during the holidays, when many residents spend time with their families, travel outside the city, or participate in religious and cultural events.
On April 2 and 3, which correspond to Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, trams and buses will run according to holiday timetables. These schedules are typically less frequent than regular weekday services but are adjusted to accommodate essential travel needs. Additionally, on the night from Friday to Saturday, the N92 night bus will operate, ensuring that late-night passengers still have access to public transport.
On Holy Saturday, April 4, public transport will follow Saturday timetables. This means a moderate level of service, suitable for those preparing for Easter celebrations, shopping, or attending church services. During the night from Saturday to Sunday, two-night bus lines—N92 and N96—will be available, providing connectivity across the city.
Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, April 5 and 6, are public holidays in Poland, and transport will operate according to special holiday schedules. Services are usually limited compared to regular days, so passengers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance. On the night from Sunday to Monday, the N92 night bus will again be in service.
Finally, on Tuesday, April 7, public transport will continue to run on holiday timetables, marking a gradual return to normal operations after the festive period.
Passengers are advised to check detailed timetables in advance, as changes may affect travel plans. The adjusted schedules aim to balance efficiency with accessibility, ensuring that residents can move around the city comfortably while reflecting the slower pace of the Easter holidays.
Toruń to hold Easter food blessing ceremonies
On Holy Saturday, April 4, 2026, Toruń will host one of the most cherished Easter traditions in Poland—the blessing of Easter food, known as “Święconka.” This special ceremony will take place at noon in the historic Old Town Square and will be led by Bishop Arkadiusz Okrój, with the participation of the city’s mayor, Paweł Gulewski. The event is expected to gather residents, families, and visitors who wish to celebrate this meaningful moment together.
The celebration will begin earlier, at 11:30 a.m., with a vibrant and colorful procession starting from the clock tower on Szeroka Street. Organized by the FolkON Association and the “Młody Toruń” Song and Dance Ensemble, the procession titled “Święconka na Ludowo” will feature participants dressed in traditional folk costumes, carrying beautifully decorated Easter baskets. This joyful parade aims to revive and highlight the rich cultural heritage associated with Easter in Poland.
Organizers encourage all residents to participate, emphasizing that even a small element of traditional clothing—such as a floral scarf, embroidered shirt, or colorful ribbon—is enough to join the celebration. The goal is to show that tradition is not something distant or outdated but a living, evolving part of community life.
In addition to the main event, another unique initiative will take place earlier that day at 10:00 a.m. at Przystań Toruń. The “Święconka in a helmet” event combines Easter customs with a focus on road safety. Motorcyclists, cyclists, and scooter users gather to celebrate while promoting responsible behavior and the importance of wearing helmets. Educational activities and discussions on safety are also part of the program.
The tradition of blessing Easter food in Poland dates back to the 14th century and carries deep symbolic meaning. The basket typically includes eggs (symbolizing new life), bread (representing prosperity and the body of Christ), sausage (a sign of abundance), salt (purity and protection), cake (skill and celebration), horseradish (strength), and a lamb (humility and gentleness). Each element reflects values tied to both faith and everyday life.
This combination of tradition, community spirit, and modern initiatives makes Holy Saturday in Toruń a unique and memorable experience for all participants.
