Here’s a look at your afternoon headlines for Wednesday, April 1.
Weather: Scattered showers possible this week
Scattered showers and storms will continue through the rest of the afternoon, with a few more severe storms possible.
There is a low risk for isolated hail and a tornado, plus a slightly higher risk for scattered damaging winds.
We will continue to see some scattered showers for the rest of the week, and then a cold front will move through Saturday night along with a line of potentially heavier rain to bring us back to the 50s heading into next week.
Marietta College names next athletic director
Marietta College has selected alumnus Joe Bergin ’86 as its next director of intercollegiate athletics, President Kathleen Poorman Dougherty announced Wednesday.
Bergin will succeed Larry Hiser, who is expected to retire in May after 18 years leading the Pioneers’ athletic department, the college said.
Marietta trolley set to return May 2
The Marietta Trolley will return May 2 for the 2026 season, offering narrated tours highlighting the city’s history, architecture and attractions, according to the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Tours depart at 10:30 a.m. from the Armory Visitor Center, 241 Front St., last about 90 minutes and seat up to 26 passengers; tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children, and the bureau recommends reservations.
The trolley is not wheelchair accessible and requires climbing three steps to board, the bureau said.
Morrisey signs tax cut package
Gov. Patrick Morrisey has signed a package of tax cuts totaling more than $230 million a year, including a 5% across-the-board personal income tax cut for every West Virginia taxpayer.
Morrisey said the goal is to put money back in residents’ pockets and keep the state competitive, citing $14.3 billion in recent investment announcements.
He also signed legislation aligning West Virginia’s tax code with permanent provisions of the Trump-era tax cuts, including changes tied to child and dependent care credits and business deductions.
The changes take effect for the 2026 tax year.
