An Army spokesperson has stated that houses, buildings, vehicles, and military equipment were destroyed in an explosion at an ammunition depot.

Burundi’s army confirmed that a blast at a military base in Bujumbura has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 civilians and injuries to 57 others. The explosion was caused by an electrical short circuit.

General Gaspard Baratuza, an army spokesperson, mentioned, “Houses in various neighborhoods were damaged, along with private vehicles. Military equipment and facilities were burnt and destroyed.”

No soldiers’ deaths were reported, but three among the injured were military personnel. The incident occurred at the main ammunition depot of the Burundi National Defence Force (FDNB) in Musaga, a suburb of Bujumbura.

The depot in Musaga is located in a densely populated area, adjacent to the Higher Institute for Military Cadres (ISCAM), where army officers are trained.

Burundi, identified as the world’s poorest country by GDP per capita in 2023 by the World Bank, has been grappling with severe economic challenges, including a fuel shortage.

A police officer at the scene noted that efforts to contain the fire were hindered due to a lack of water. He described the situation as a “massive inferno” that reduced the base camp to ashes.

Even on Wednesday afternoon, there were still signs of fire and smoke, as stated by the same police officer.

President Evariste Ndayishimiye expressed his condolences to all affected by the fire on social media. Citizens were urged by Burundian authorities to report any unexploded munitions by phone and cautioned to refrain from touching them.
