Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole are working together towards a new cultural goal of national recognition.
The area is getting ready to submit a joint application to be considered as the UK’s inaugural Town of Culture in 2028.
BCP Council will send an expression of interest to the national program by the deadline of March 31, emphasizing the unified cultural identity and creative strengths of Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP).

Councillor Andy Martin, responsible for culture, communication, and customer affairs, stated, “We take pride in our cultural offerings, but what truly sets the BCP area apart is the people behind it—community groups, volunteers, artists, young individuals, and residents who breathe life into creativity every single day.”
The UK Town of Culture contest is open to towns of all sizes nationwide, with one winner receiving £3 million to implement a Town of Culture program in 2028.
Two runner-ups will be given £250,000 each, and all shortlisted towns will receive £60,000 to assist in developing a comprehensive bid in 2026.
Councillor Martin added, “This bid presents a wonderful opportunity to open up new avenues, reach out to different audiences, and honor local narratives from all three towns.
“The more individuals who participate, the more robust and inclusive our Town of Culture journey will become.”
The BCP bid centers on community-driven culture, celebrating local creativity, widening access to the arts, and creating chances for more residents to engage, shape activities, and share their stories.
It incorporates insights from arts venues, cultural institutions, grassroots organizations, and community collaborators, demonstrating a collective identity inspired by our coastal region and natural surroundings.
