Trung Ha supports locals in improving the economic efficiency of bamboo forests.
The bamboo forest in Trung Ha commune is intensively cultivated and well-maintained.
In Trung Ha commune, we have heard many encouraging testimonials from people who have drastically changed their habits: in the past, bamboo fertilization and maintenance were neglected, but now intensive cultivation, fertilization, and bamboo care are practiced. “Previously, the uncontrolled harvesting of bamboo and shoots, without any proper technical care, had degraded the bamboo forest, resulting in a decrease in productivity and quality, and difficulties for my family. In 2022, thanks to the provincial policy of developing intensive bamboo cultivation areas, my family received financial support, including the supply of fertilizers and participation in training on bamboo forest restoration techniques. With proper fertilization and care, the bamboo produced more shoots, their stems are stronger and straighter, with longer nodes, which led to a better price. Today, our 1.6-hectare bamboo forest is developing well, offering high productivity and stable income,” explained Mr. Ha Van Dinh from Che village in Trung Ha commune.
Not only Dinh’s family, but also many households in Trung Ha such as Lo Van Thuc, Ha Van Chien (De village), Ha Van Mai (Pong village), Ha Van Uyen, Ha Van Chau (Loi village), Pham Ba To (Phu Nam village), Ha Van Khoan, Ha Van Coi (Muong village), Ha Van Than, Lu Van Binh (Can village) have actively intensified bamboo cultivation, fertilization, and maintenance, achieving quite high economic efficiency.
Thanks to the income from bamboo sales, many households in the commune, bamboo growers, have been able to build strong houses, invest in their children’s education, buy household appliances, and contribute to the local rural development program. This allows the region’s residents to thrive, overcome difficulties, and prosper on their ancestral lands.
Mr. Tran Van Boi, vice chairman of the People’s Committee of Trung Ha commune, said, “Trung Ha commune has 3,308.63 hectares of bamboo forest. From 2022 to 2025, in accordance with the provincial policy of intensive bamboo forest development, the commune has intensively cultivated and restored over 2,800 hectares of bamboo forest. In the first quarter of 2026, it will intensively cultivate and restore an additional 508.63 hectares. This bamboo forest area has been intensively cultivated, maintained, and fertilized using appropriate techniques, resulting in good bamboo growth and development, with higher productivity than traditional forest plantations. Restoration and intensive cultivation have improved the quality of the bamboo forest, increasing the shoot production coefficient by 1.5 times, with larger shoots and longer nodes. Several forest roads, connected to local roads, have been built, facilitating transportation in the region’s villages and hamlets.”
To evolve the mindset and practices of local populations regarding bamboo forest planting and maintenance, the People’s Committee of Trung Ha commune has collaborated with relevant agencies to conduct awareness-raising actions in villages and hamlets. The goal was to disseminate and promote policies favoring the development of intensive bamboo cultivation areas and provide training on bamboo forest maintenance and fertilization techniques. In collaboration with the Quan Son forest product processing company, the Committee completed the necessary steps for FSC certification (Forest Stewardship Council) of 3,000 hectares of bamboo. This certification helps ensure the quality of the commune’s bamboo, increase its economic value, and facilitate its consumption.
In the coming months, Trung Ha commune will continue to strengthen state management of forest protection and development in general, and of bamboo forests in particular; assess the current state of bamboo processing facilities in the region to identify solutions to improve the efficiency of production and marketing of derivative products; and encourage the population to not buy or consume immature bamboo. At the same time, it will establish cooperation models for bamboo production and marketing, creating large areas of raw material concentration and serving as a springboard to attract companies that will invest capital, scientific knowledge, and technology in intensive cultivation and sustainable development of bamboo forests, to ensure sustainable livelihoods for local populations.
