Victor Wembanyama has been sharing some messages for several days. With a strong argument as the central theme: defense matters. In fact, the Frenchman took advantage of the San Antonio Spurs’ victory over the Milwaukee Bucks (127-95) to dismiss a common misconception about the NBA.
Some observers, especially in Europe, tend to underestimate the defensive level in the NBA. But the French prodigy does not share this view. Currently in his 3rd year in the League, the Spurs’ interior player debunked this misconception.
“Before coming here, I heard a lot about how no one plays defense in the NBA anymore. Or that there simply isn’t any defense in this league. I heard a lot of that before coming here, but it’s simply not true.
Players are simply very good… In reality, people defend in the NBA and there is a lot of preparation beforehand. I was surprised by the dedication of the entire staff when I arrived here. And I heard that from other franchises. Franchises that win, franchises that didn’t win.
And we weren’t winning much at the time. People really defend in the NBA and prepare a lot for it,” Victor Wembanyama emphasized.
Defense obviously plays a role in the game. In the regular season, the defensive level of teams can sometimes be inconsistent. But to aim for the NBA title, it is a fundamental element.
