The New York Islanders suffered a 4-1 defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers at UBS Arena on Friday. Owen Tippett, Alex Bump (1 goal, 1 assist), and Matvei Michkov (1 goal, 2 assists) gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead within the first 23 minutes, with Travis Sanheim (1 goal, 1 assist) adding another goal. JG Pageau scored the lone goal for the Islanders.
Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves on 21 shots in the loss, while Dan Vladar turned away 20 of 21 shots for the Flyers. This loss was the Islanders’ third consecutive defeat in regulation, marking their second three-game losing streak of the season and the first since the opening three games.
Anders Lee expressed frustration with the team’s performance, stating, “It’s tough to lose three in a row. Our mistakes are costing us points and putting us behind in games.” With this loss, the Flyers (88 points) are now one point behind the Islanders (89 points) with a game in hand. The Islanders remain in third place in the Metropolitan Division, just one point ahead of the Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets (88 points), who also have a game in hand.
Bo Horvat also criticized the team’s effort, saying, “That was not even close to being enough effort by us tonight in a big hockey game, against a team that’s chasing us in the standings. We have to be a lot better than we were tonight.”
