Supergirl, the new chapter of James Gunn’s DCU, arrives with a fresh new trailer. Led by Milly Alcock, the film by Craig Gillespie clearly aims to play the card of a dark and vengeful space odyssey.

But what is really happening behind the scenes of the production of Supergirl? Between the revolving door of soundtrack composers, switching from Ramin Djawadi to Junkie XL before ending up with Claudia Sarne, and the chilling echoes of test screenings, the atmosphere is not exactly festive. And the rumors of editing room butchery to boost the presence of a Superman (David Corenswet) called in for reinforcement only heighten our slight worry.

The context doesn’t help, with Warner’s titanic acquisition by Paramount plunging the future of James Gunn’s DCU into artistic uncertainty. One wonders if the brain behind Guardians of the Galaxy will still steer this ship in the midst of institutional and financial turmoil. Nevertheless, marketing is moving forward with a teaser that teased Clark Kent, and now we finally have a new trailer for Supergirl that aims to make its mark.

Supergirl, Super Grunge

Farewell to the cornfields of Kansas and Clark Kent’s Ultra-Brite smile, the tone of Supergirl is resolutely punk, grunge, and quite gloomy (at least: what these words mean in Hollywood terms, in a blockbuster). James Gunn and director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) have emphasized this: Kara Zor-El is a broken woman who has seen her world disintegrate before her eyes. Far from Clark’s idyllic childhood, she carries a post-traumatic stress syndrome that she seems to drown in bottles of galactic moonshine, between two space shores.

And things get worse when her dog, Krypto, is shot by the villain Krem of the Ochre Hills. Kara then has three days to find a remedy, otherwise her only friend will bite the dust. Sufficient incentive to travel the galaxy while breaking jaws, and to make friends with a loud-mouthed Lobo.

Reunion of the Hell’s Angels club

In her quest for redemption/vendetta/initiation (cross out the unnecessary mentions), Milly Alcock will have to share screen time with Matthias Schoenaerts (the fearsome Krem), Eve Ridley (young Ruthye Mary Knoll, Supergirl’s protege), David Krumholtz as Zor-El (Kara’s father), and a Jason Momoa now officially in charge of Lobo’s motorcycle, and free from the image of Aquaman.

It remains to be seen if this mix of space melancholy and gently rebellious punk will captivate the audience. We hope that Craig Gillespie’s (and James Gunn’s) vision will not be too diluted by studio imperatives and anxieties related to Warner’s acquisition. Final verdict on June 24, 2026, the release date of Supergirl in cinemas. Knowing that Clayface will arrive on October 21.
