After years of standing still, Sony Pictures has just officially relaunched the adaptation of the cult saga Metal Gear Solid by entrusting the reins of the project to a duo of directors who are not necessarily reassuring.

Say that Metal Gear Solid is a true institution of video art, to put it mildly. At the time of writing these lines, the saga displays more than 65 million copies sold, as many as God of War. Founded by the demiurge Hideo Kojima, the franchise nevertheless lost its creator with loss and crash during the chaotic production of Metal Gear Solid V : The Phantom Pain, leaving the saga bloodless, orphaned and in the hands of Konami, a company not always inspired.

The film adaptation project of MGShe has been hanging around for almost a quarter of a century. Kojima was already dreaming of it in 2000, just after the earthquake. Metal Gear Solid PS1 version. Between 2018 and 2020, we believed that the machine was launched with Oscar Isaac tipped for the headband of Snake and Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong : Skull Island) at the controls. But the film remained in a state of brain death for ages. Against all odds, Snake has just woken up, but with a choice of directors that leaves one doubtful.

Metal Gear Solid : Snake Cheater

The Hollywood Reporter a révéllé that Sony has confided the adaptation of Metal Gear Solid à Zach Lipovsky et Adam B. Stein. We owe them the SF thriller Freaks in 2018, but especially the recent Destination Finale : Bloodlineswhich hit the box office in 2026. With a budget of $50 million, the film has already earned 317.9 million greenbacks, and it also garnered the best reviews of the saga (with a score of 73/100 on Metacritic). On the production side, the usual Avi and Ari Arad will supervise the site.

The two directors obviously used their politically correct commentary to express their excitement about adapting MGS :

“We are honored to partner with the incredible management team at Sony. Working with several of their departments over the last year, we have been blown away by the level of creativity, thoughtfulness and passion felt during each conversation. […] Metal Gear Solid is nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that transformed video gaming forever. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”

Looking forward to seeing Jared Leto as Cyborg Ninja (please, not that)

We still wonder how to adapt such a narrative labyrinth? Focus on the episode Shadow Moses (the original PlayStation game) seems like the most logical solution. But transpose Metal Gearit is above all coming to terms with the obsessions of its creator: artificial intelligence, transhumanism, the fear of oblivion and death, and a deep reflection on the intrinsic violence of our societies.

Added to this is the fact that Kojima is no longer at all linked to Konami, he will have no say in the final product. Without the creator as a safeguard, we are very afraid to see Metal Gear become a license for action films Jason Bourne. Let’s hope that Lipovsky and Stein will not be satisfied with a simple stupid film.

For now, no release date has been set and no actor names have been officially attached to the future Metal Gear Solid. The duo also has a busy schedule since they are also working on a big sci-fi film called The Earthling as well as on an animation project around Venom. Suffice to say that Solid Snake will have to remain discreet for a little while longer.
