A console that leaves nothing to chance
The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is an evolved version of the original Asus ROG Ally It adopts a traditional controller format which makes it more ergonomic, Hall effect triggers and joysticks placed according to the Xbox layout, with this slight asymmetry which makes it easier to hold. Although it gains a little weight, going from 678g to 715g, the weight distribution is improved and it feels lighter in the hand.
As for the display, it retains the screen of the previous generation, namely a 7-inch IPS LCD panel which displays 1920 x 1080 pixels at 120 Hz maximum. It is touchscreen, supports VRR via AMD FreeSync Premium, which is a real asset for demanding PC games. The absence of OLED could be regrettable, but can be explained by the prohibitive cost of such technology which would easily raise the price of the console above 1,000 euros.
A configuration with solid backing
The heart of the machine is an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme accompanied by a Radeon 890M RDNA 3.5 GPU with 24 GB of RAM at 8000 MT/s, 1 TB of storage and even a 45 TOPS NPU dedicated to AI operations. It therefore runs the majority of PC games on its interface Windows 11, but also and especially Xbox Play Anywhere titles. There is even a TDP Boost which allows you to unlock temporary boost for the most demanding games, even if it has difficulty triggering.
For the battery, it is 80 Wh and identical to that of the ROG Ally X. In our test, The Witcher 3 in 720p with settings not too high was able to run for 4 hours in silent mode, for 2 hours in Turbo mode. Knowing that the console is more powerful than the previous one and that the figures are similar, this proves that there has been energy optimization. On the other hand, there is no 65 W USB-C charger that is provided, and for the price that is a shame.
