With several million players and an expanding market, gaming is taking a growing place in the Moroccan digital economy. Faced with this still underexploited potential, the authorities are increasing initiatives to structure a local sector and support talent.

Morocco is accelerating the structuring of its gaming industry, an emerging sector with great potential. On the sidelines of the GITEX Africa Morocco 2026 exhibition in Marrakech, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and Huawei Morocco signed, Tuesday April 7, a memorandum of understanding aimed at supporting the development of digital and creative industries.

Signed by Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid (photo, left), Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, and David Li (photo, right), general director of Huawei Morocco, this agreement is part of a dynamic of consolidation of a national ecosystem that is still fragmented, but driven by the rise of a new generation of independent developers and studios.

The partnership provides for several areas of intervention, including technical support for the Morocco Gaming Expo 2026, scheduled for May 20 to 24 in Rabat. Huawei will contribute to equipping spaces dedicated to training and workshops, with the aim of optimizing learning conditions and allowing developers to test their projects in a suitable environment.

The agreement also includes support for local talents, with support for the participation of Moroccan teams in international initiatives carried by the Chinese group, as well as targeted support for five developers selected by the ministry. This approach aims to strengthen the visibility of local profiles and facilitate their integration into international circuits.

In Morocco, gaming today goes beyond simple entertainment. It is seen as a creative industry with strong potential for creating jobs, attracting investment and developing advanced digital skills. According to projections from the report “State of the African Video Game Industry 2026” by SpielFabrique, published in January 2026, annual revenues from this sector are estimated at 227.3 million USD in 2024 in Morocco, with anticipated growth to 297.3 million USD from here 2027.

This dynamic does not escape the public authorities. Morocco has increased initiatives to structure its gaming ecosystem, with start-up incubation programs, dedicated spaces like Rabat Gaming City and public-private partnerships aimed at bringing local talents closer to global value chains.

The agreement signed with Huawei Morocco is a continuation of this movement. It follows a previous partnership around the development of local esports, carried out in collaboration with Rabat Gaming City, the Royal Moroccan Federation of Electronic Games (FRMJE) and innovative training programs.
