At the 2026 Corporate Bond Market Forum, during the discussion session “From issuance to investment: strengthening Vietnam’s corporate bond ecosystem”, held on April 2 in Hanoi, Ms. Hoang Thi Hang, Deputy General Director of Binh Thuan Plastic Group, shared his point of view as an issuer, and in particular his experience in implementing green bonds.

According to Hang, issuing corporate bonds is not a spur-of-the-moment decision, but rather the result of a long-term strategic financial restructuring process.

After more than 18 years in the plastics industry, with a clientele ranging from domestic companies to large foreign-invested companies such as Tetra Pak, SCG, Central Retail and URC, Binh Thuan Plastics identified the urgent need to diversify its sources of capital to achieve its goal of global expansion.

“By the end of 2024, we have set ourselves the objective of “becoming international”. At that point, diversifying funding sources was no longer an option, but a necessity,” said Ms. Hang.

In this context, companies have gradually turned to the capital market, transforming their subsidiaries into listed companies and preparing the ground for long-term fundraising, notably through bonds.

Deputy General Director of Binh Thuan Plastic Group said that the decision to issue bonds is related to the specific characteristics of the investment project, namely the plastic pallet rental segment – an area requiring stable capital in the medium and long term.

“We need a source of capital that can be locked in for the medium to long term, instead of relying on short-term loans from banks, which puts pressure on liquidity,” Hang said.

In practice, credit institutions often favor short-term loans to this sector, which complicates the management of companies’ cash flow. At the same time, corporate bonds are more suited to a long-term investment structure. Not only do they reduce dependence on bank credit, but the bond market also opens access to more diversified sources of financing, thus strengthening financial autonomy.

Ms. Hang emphasized that the true value of a bond issue lies not only in raising capital, but also in the process of standardizing business practices. By participating in the capital market, companies are forced to improve their governance, financial transparency and regulatory compliance. This is not only a requirement of investors, but also an essential foundation for their long-term development.

Issuing bonds also helps companies build a “track record” (a history of operations, reputation and compliance in the capital market) – a crucial factor in accessing larger capital raising channels in the future, including international markets or listing on the stock market.

Binh Thuan Plastics, one of the few companies in the plastics sector to have successfully issued green bonds, recognizes that this tool has many advantages, despite higher initial costs.

According to Ms. Hang, the cost of issuing green bonds includes not only financial costs, but also compliance costs, audit costs, appraisal costs, capital utilization monitoring costs… and even costs that arise. after the broadcast.

However, in the long term, it is a wise investment, allowing companies to access quality investors, including funds and financial institutions applying strict ESG criteria. These investors are generally long-term partners, contributing to the stability of financing sources and the optimization of the cost of capital for the company.

Furthermore, the issuance of green bonds promotes global standardization within companies, from their operations to their reporting, thus minimizing risks and strengthening their competitiveness. Corporate bonds, and particularly green bonds, can become an essential part of a company’s financial strategy if used wisely.

“Participation in the capital market not only provides businesses with additional resources, but also creates momentum for standardization and more sustainable development,” Hang said.
