Medical students ready to suspend their shifts after the end of their remuneration: “A blatant disregard”

Around 300 students from the medical faculties of ULB and UMons are on call every month in the three HUB establishments (the Jules Bordet Institute, the Erasme hospital and the Queen Fabiola children’s university hospital). Until now, these guards were subject to a fee covering the mobility costs to get there. But since March, these guards have no longer been paid.

“Requiring students to provide such a volume of on-call duty – for free – constitutes, in the eyes of the signatory organizations, an unacceptable organizational injustice, a blatant disregard, and a profound disrespect for the work of these future doctors,” we can read in the press release.

Medical interns cut off from their remuneration for their guards: “There is no longer any respect, no more recognition”

The student organizations therefore decided to file a strike notice. A general assembly will be held on Monday April 13 “in order to officially vote on the positions of the student movement and plan the modalities of concerted action”.

However, student organizations remain “demanding a constructive, responsible and respectful dialogue about their work which remains essential in a chain of collaboration between different caregivers”. Although requests for meetings were sent to the management of the HUB and ULB, “no contact has been established”, underline the associations in their joint press release.
